I was a freshman in Drama in 1980 and went to the Beaux Arts Ball in 1981. This where I met and kindled the romance with the man who I later married, also a Drama Major, Roger Cox. So that was a very important night to us. Here we are, 25 years later still together, married and happy thanks to Carnegie-Mellon and especially the Beaux Arts Ball. We are celebrating our quarter centennial.

Carnegie Mellon Hosts Discussion on "Cultural Trustees: Changing Roles, Responsibilities"

Carnegie Mellon University's Arts and Culture Observatory will present a panel discussion and open forum entitled "Cultural Trustees: Their Changing Roles and Responsibilities" at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum on the North Side.

Panelists include Marilyn Coleman, former executive director of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council; Jim McCarl, entrepreneur and veteran of many local arts boards; Dana Payne, managing director of Xpressions Dance Company; and Jane Werner, director of the Children's Museum. Dan J. Martin, director of Carnegie Mellon's Institute for the Management of Creative Enterprises, will moderate the panel and ensuing discussion.

The panel will focus on several key issues that confront cultural managers, such as how the role of the board has evolved in the last 15 years; what "good stewardship" means today; where the next generation of trustees can be found; whether stewardship issues in the for-profit sector (i.e., Enron and WorldCom) have affected the not-for-profit sector; and how to help trustees walk the line between governance and management.

Conversations with MF Contemporary Artists: Edie Tsong Making Contact: Seeking Intimacy in Contemporary Life

Edie Tsong's recent works include performance, the use of facsimile, videoconference, and computer voices. During her talk, Making Contact: Seeking Intimacy in Contemporary Life, Tsong will show a video that is approximately 40 minutes long, and will speak as the video plays. Her presentation will address identity and communication in our technologically mediated world. Tsong creates installations and performances based on communication and the written word. Her artwork often presents text in unusual contexts, such as wrapping telephone poles with strips of paper reading “I love you,” or copying in cursive script every name in the Roswell, New Mexico telephone book and presenting it in a mural-like format.

Edie Tsong (American, born 1968) received her BA in East Asian Studies at NYU and her M.F.A. from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She has presented installations and performances at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, NM; the Harwood Center, Albuquerque, NM (2002); the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans (2001); and Texas Fine Arts Association, Austin (2001).
