While comedy in Pittsburgh has always been a "guy’s club," it’s becoming increasingly inclusive

Comedy | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: “Damn. You’re funny for a woman.”

From comments like this to being drafted for shows just because a manager wants to sleep with them to being made to feel as if they’re female first, comic second, women in comedy face a different set of criticisms compared to their male counterparts.

It is good to hear that change is happening in the comedy industry, even if it is only on a local level. I like Pittsburgh and I think it has a really great art scene, so it is nice to know that changes like this are coming about. To me, changes on the local level might be the most important, because really these issues exist on a case by case basis that is best to be solved on a small scale that can then find its way up into the system. These systemic issues can only be solved by individuals who decide to make changes in their lives that then influence others and eventually create change on a wide scale. Comedy clubs are historically boy’s clubs, so seeing that there is change happening here is good to see. Like a butterfly flapping its wings to cause a hurricane on the other side of the world, these small changes can make a big difference.
