Award-Winning Costume Designer Susan Yanofsky ’92 Dresses the Part

UMass Boston: Costume design had never figured in her career plans. Her work in economic development included serving as Westwood’s economic development officer, consulting independently, and directing economic development for Lexington. At home, she sewed her children’s Halloween costumes but carefully avoided volunteering for school productions.

I found Susan Yanofsky’s career path into costume design both interesting and inspiring, particularly given how unexpectedly she entered the industry. Having originally worked in economic development, Yanofsky found herself taking over the costume program at her daughter's high school after helping with a production of West Side Story. I particularly enjoyed reading about her approach to costume design and how she considers the character, their background, and the reasoning behind what they wear. Her discussion of designing Les Liaisons Dangereuses during the #MeToo movement was especially interesting, as she chose contemporary clothing to make the themes of the play feel more relevant to today's audiences. I think this highlights how costume design can extend beyond historical accuracy and become a tool for communicating larger themes. It was also exciting to read about her return to education later in life and her continued success in the industry.
