Tinkercad Goes Brick Mode

autodesk.blogs.com: Tinkercad just added a cool new mode in yesterdays 3.2 update. For those unaware, Tinkercad is the awesome free web based 3D modeling tool for everyone 4-400 years old. There is now the is the new brick workspace. If you create or open a model and then select the new brick workspace, it will convert the Tinkercad model to a brick style model reminiscent of those Danish plastic bricks that hurt when you step on them.

As someone who has spent countless hours trying to figure out drafting programs, I think this feature is super cool. When drafting on a computer, the process can be tedious, frustrating, and become boring. However, theatre is a place of creativity and that idea should be present in all parts of the process. This feature allows the designer to harken back to their childhood when building and creating things from uniform rectangular blocks was fun and exciting with no limits. It can serve as inspiration for the designer, especially when they have looked at their creations for so long that they begin to hate them. It allows the designer to see their designs in a new light, even if the shapes are simplistic, Some designers might start to think of their designs as "work" instead of a piece of art that they created and should be passionate about. Turning their work into a Lego structure can allow the designer to rediscover the excitement and fun in the work that they have been slaving over for weeks. Our imaginations are the most free when we are children. It was not constrained by social expectations, constructs, and ideals. Instead it was able to roam freely as we discovered the world for the first time. Sometimes, as adults, it is good to revert back to that innocent, curious mindset and what better way to do that than to play with a bunch of legos.

"Brick mode" seems like a cool way to simplify LEGO sculpture design. The traditional mode of LEGO set design starts with a "master builder", an experienced LEGO technician well-versed in the construction of LEGO designs and knowledgeable in the catalogue of LEGO pieces. Tinkercad's brick mode seems like it would help an amateur builder like myself realize my larger LEGO dreams. My mother is an architect, and her favorite pastime is building with LEGOs. When I came of LEGO-age, I inherited both her LEGOs and her love of playing in that sandbox. Because of their structural integrity, sometimes LEGOs allow the creator to make buildings that, if built to actual size, would defy laws of physics. That freedom from reality allows us to open our minds to previously unthinkable designs, and that is the first step in building the designs of the future.
