The Drama Desk awards always throw me a loop. It is said to be a hint of what the Tony nominations will be. Granted that a lot of the nominations are Off-Broadway it is still shocking to see some of the nominations. Also one thing I learned is that such shows as Dear Evan Hansen which ran Off-Broadway last season, is not eligible for this year Drama Desks since they were nominated last season. It is always nice to see the technical nominations are not just Broadway shows. Since Broadway has the money to make elaborate designs, its nice to see that its not just the money that makes them good. A good designer is able to make a good design no matter the budget. What’s amazing about this year’s nominations are that most of them are Off-Broadway shows! I am really interested in seeing the shows that are nominated for best puppet design. The list is short compared to the others so I am curious to see what they are doing.
