When Family Inspires Political Protest Art

HowlRound: I was shell-shocked after the recent US presidential election and simply posted on social media, as one does in the #worldweliveinnow. The post was a link to an article by a historian who’d spent his life studying the Black Plague; his was a fascinating perspective, full of predictions based on human history, that things will get better. However, he said, we are destined (doomed?) to a plague of our own before a return to normalcy.

I am so incredibly happy with this article. One of the main struggles that I have been encountering after this election is figuring out how to talk to my family about the choices we made. Everyone in my immediate family voted for Trump, and when I first heard that I was absolutely shocked. And while I have never personally been called terms along the line of snowflake, I have heard family members bash the entire Democratic Party with terms like that. I think it is great that so many different people gathered together to create and piece of art such as this one. I think it is more important than ever to emphasize these things because they should not slip aside as normal or anything other than rude and disrespectful. I hope that people continue to create and do work that challenges and attempts to change the things that are currently happening in today's environment. Art is a key way to emphasize that change needs to occur, and it is powerful that something like this has happened.
