New National "Right to Work" Bill Threatens Hollywood Unions

Hollywood Reporter: Legislation introduced in Congress with little fanfare Tuesday could decimate Hollywood unions and further accelerate the decline of unions nationwide by allowing workers across the country to opt out of paying union dues or fees even if they receive the benefits of a union-negotiated contract.

Coming from a State where Right to Work is already a thing (Florida), I can say that I greatly appreciate the model and I support the bill. A union is only as strong as its members and the union will have plenty of members if they are doing their job right. However, I don't believe that people who want to get a job should be forced to pay Union dues. Mind you, I think if they aren't paying Union dues, they do not deserve the protection and benefits that a Union offers, but if you can't afford to be in the Union, then you shouldn't have to pay to be in the Union. No union, no union benefits. It really is a simple system and I do believe that the stipulation of an entry level career job in a unionized field that you be able to pay union dues is having a drastic impact on the creation of new jobs and the willingness for workers to take them. I also feel like Hollywood is kind of irrelevant. They can be upset about it but it really is more about industries like construction where they can't get railroad workers anymore because a good chunk of their first and second paycheck goes to union dues.
