SAG Says Woman Who Sued IMDb for Revealing Age Has 'Legitimate' Fear of Being Blacklisted
Hollywood Reporter: Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the deputy national executive director and general counsel of the Screen Actors Guild, is sticking up for the privacy of the anonymous woman who sued the Internet Movie Database for revealing her age. In a new declaration to the court, Crabtree-Ireland says that the woman's fears of being "blacklisted" if revealed are well-founded.

Thanks to this blog, I have been following this case since it was first buzzed about. The development of SAG's support seems to bring more legitimacy to the woman's case, and I hope that it might help her out. I tend to side with her on this debate because I feel that she should be able to control what details of her personal information are released, especially on an IMDbPro type profile for which she is a paying customer. What's especially interesting in this new development is the fact that SAG claims that numerous members have voiced concerns about IMDb's practices and the fear of publicly speaking up about these concerns. It's obvious that IMDb's policies are unfair and violate peoples' rights to their private information. I hope that a large union like SAG has enough power to help make a difference when it comes to protecting its members.
I agree that she should be able to control her personal information and that she does have ground for a lawsuit, but IMDb has rights to. They have the constitutional right to face their accuser. On the other hand it'll hurt her career even more if she does come out. I'm really interested in how this will play out.
I'm starting to think that her issue is bigger than it seems publicly. Maybe she has lied about her age in situations that could lead to severe punishment. Maybe she did certain work before turning 18 where she lied about being over 18 and if her true age is revealed this past could come to haunt her. Maybe she spent a few years involved with something that she wants to now disappear so she lies about her age to cover up some missing years. There are tons of reasons to fight this hard to protect a lie. My only hesitation is that IMDB doesn't claim to report fact. So I'm not sure what she's so upset about.
I understand why this woman has decided that she needed to lie in order to get more work and so that she wouldn't be discriminated against due to her age, and I'm sympathetic to it. It seems that, since SAG is now throwing in it's lot with this woman, that they are also aware of such discrimination, and there are possibly other various cases where something such as this has occurred. SAG's weight and statement obviously gives a lot of credibility to this woman, and I think she does have a legitimate fear. She would be recognized moving forward in her career for this one incident, and either way things turned out for her, would probably be viewed badly in one way or another. It'll be interesting to see how this particular motion turns out and how the case turns out overall, and what it means for people and what they can and can't say in certain places on the internet
