Fox to Push for Supporting Actor Oscar Nomination for Andy Serkis

The article mentioned Avatar only in the regard of Fox's blockbusters, but I feel like it may make a strong argument toward the consideration of Serkis for the nomination for his motion capture work. Avatar was one of the first major films to contain entire performances of main characters done in mo-cap, and to take an example, there can be no argument that Zoe Saldana's performance as Neytiri isn't hers, even for the computer animation on top and never seeing her human through the whole film. The development of more accurate motion capture down to minute detail may force a major change in perception of those roles in the industry.
Ignoring actors when you can't see their faces goes back a lot farther than just motion capture. I'm reminded of 2001 A Space Odyssey's apes losing out to the ones in Planet of the Apes, mostly because the costumes and acting seemed so realistic that the voters assumed they had to be actual apes. A more recent example is Serkis himself playing Gollum in the first Lord of the Rings movie, he was determined to be ineligible for an Oscar even though many critics thought he deserved the award, all because he didn't directly appear on film.
