Blank-Firing Guns
Props.eric-hart.com: "On October 2, 2010, David Birrell was appearing in Stephen Sondheim’s Passion at the Donmar Warehouse in London. During a performance, one of the blank-firing guns used apparently had a problem, and Birell sustained an injury to his right eye. He may lose his sight in it."

Due to the fact that I have never directly worked with blank-firing guns before, I was not aware of the danger of these props. It's interesting that they seem to be in common use without proper safety precautions. What I don't understand is why the safety precautions that seem to be in place are not followed. Even if it is just one gun - one prop - every precaution should be followed to a T. The people who are using them should be properly trained, the fight directors properly trained, and everyone should adhere to the basic rule on sets - if it's not yours, don't touch it. I think it would actually be quite simple for people to safely use these possibly dangerous guns in the right situation and with the right training and precautions.
