In Election Year, Unions Stump for Health Care

Backstage: "Three years ago Meredith Kaunitz was getting ready for the next phase of her acting and dancing career. She had worked steadily in regional theatre up and down the East Coast, but nonunion pay wasn't enough to live on. So she updated her headshots, learned new monologues, and began attending Equity principal auditions in New York, hoping to compete for roles after the union actors had had their turn."

It's great to hear that there is an active movement to reform health care and get the public aware of this problem. I had no idea just how bad it was, even within unions, until I read this. Hopefully the change that's about to happen in our administration will support a health care reform that supports people in this kind of industry. I hope that the people affected by the problems with our current health care system will speak up during this election and take advantage of this opportunity to make a change.

It's really scary to read that there are problems with health care even in unions. I know that when i went to see sicko I thought a lot about being someone working in theatre that I wouldn't get a health care plan unless I was in a union. But now it seems like health care isn't even widely given to unions. Hopefully something will be done about this or the US will find a way to actually help their citizen's who get sick.

Yes to health care. She should not have had to take a job a a receptionist and put her talents in the closet. She should have had adequate health care for a visit to the doctors to check the extent of her injury. I guess that is what is bad about an actor, they have to go from casting audition calls after another and their next days pay is not guaranteed better yet their safety. We have it as hard for designers. Sigh.
