Color Purple Recoups $11 Million Investment
Playbill News: "The Color Purple, the Broadway musical adaptation of the famed Alice Walker novel and the Steven Spielberg film, has recouped its $11 million investment."

I said it about High Fidelity, I will say it again - read the book - it is such an amazing piece of writing. I do think it would be more interesting if Oprah herself were in this production. She obviously would need a different role from the film - but that would be awesome. Can she sing?
And BTW saying they "recouped" their expenses is understating it - $11million invested, $60million made.
I remember Marc Platt said, about Wicked, that it would have to sell out for one year every seat in the Gershwin to break even. I am pretty sure that the Gershwin is one of the largest houses on Broadway, so that is quite a feat in itself. Along side that, Wicked is one of the only musicals on Broadway backed by Universal.
