UAE earns reputation as International hub for hi-tech productions

Variety: What do the latest “Star Wars,” “Fast and Furious” and “Star Trek,” installments have in common? They all recently shot in the United Arab Emirates, where a combination of incentives, security, transportation, state-of-the art studio space, a futuristic skyline and exotic desert ambiance are positioning Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the prime Middle East hub for different types of international productions.

I would love to visit this place. It would just be so cool to walk the sets and see where all these iconic movies have filmed. I don’t know much about the United States relationship with Dubai but I am wondering if it happens to go on bad terms would movies still film there or would they have to find another place to work? It is a great place for deserts and open land but it’s also hard being oversees like that. I wonder if there is somewhere in the states that they are working on making a base where movies like star trek and star wars can film that is equivalent to Dubai. I’m sure that it would save a lot of money to stay within the states and not to have to deal with oversees travel. It would also be safer but would film industries be happy with the change? I am curious about how they go about choosing where to film and if the cost and relationship with foreign countries goes into account.

It’s interesting to see how such incentives are able to bring big productions to the UAE, though it isn’t very surprising. As a location, it’s already known in western culture as a very affluent and exotic place. It’s the place where they build islands, the tallest buildings, where they build a ski course in the middle of the desert, where everyone drives a Lamborghini. So for movies like Mission Impossible, it makes sense how the location itself without the added incentives could bring a film there. As for the space epics, Star Trek and Star Wars, the vast deserts that lie just outside the cities must be a gorgeous location, particularly for the Star Wars planet of Tatooine, which I’m sure most fans know as the desert homeworld of the hero from the original trilogy. If such a location exists, and the government of that location provides up to a 30% rebate for your film shoot, I’m not at all surprised how popular the UAE is becoming amongst producers.
