Immersive Theater’s Next Stop: A Sexy ’70s Fantasy Island

The New York Times: In a Bushwick warehouse last month, members of Third Rail Projects, the Brooklyn company behind “Then She Fell,” the long-running immersive hit inspired by “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” were gathering to rehearse their newest dance-theater piece, “The Grand Paradise.” On one end of the room is a tiki hut. On the other end, an empty tank that, come showtime, will be filled with water and performers.

Immersive theatre is probably my favorite form of theatre. "The Grand Paradise" seems like an amazing and unique piece, and the 70's vibe they're playing with looks very cool. Immersive theatre allows for audiences to explore the "stage" in a freely curious and more vulnerable way. I think the artistic directors behind Third Rail Projects have a wonderful thing going for them, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more of their work become as popular as Sleep No More. Their choice of making a hedonistic 70's atmosphere kind of surprised me at first, but I think it provides an awesome way to play with themes like longing, sex, drug use, etc. I'm also impressed by their goal to have each audience member have an interaction with only 2 performers at a time. Since they have an audience limit of 60, it's a little easier to provide each audience member with an individual experience, but they still have to find a way to create enough space to separate the audience and pull in specific people.
