Why There's No Stunt Oscar Yet, According to the Directors of John Wick

Collider: Wait, why the heck isn’t there a stunt category at the Oscars? That question has become a major talking point and rallying point for cinephiles in recent years, and it’s easy to understand why. When you consider the enormous presence and importance of films like Star Wars, the Fast &‌ Furious franchise, and the MCU‌ at the box office and in the landscape of cinema at large, it’s pretty dang crazy that the crew members responsible for some of those films’ most iconic scenes aren’t getting awards recognition on par with their peers. So what’s the holdup?

But I want an award to! Sad face! Really? I was interested in reading this article about the approach to awarding a stunt Oscar and even before the article mentioned it, I was asking myself, to whom do you give this award? Maybe this is a wakeup call in how we staff motion picture sets. Perhaps it is time that we look at departments and rolls and say, what can we eliminate, merge, or isolate and use that as the standard for every film. It's more complicated than it sounds and would take the entire motion picture industry to be a part of the conversation, but I think before you ask for an award for your department, maybe your department should exist across the whole industry. Same titles, same job descriptions, same expectations, stuff like that. Once we have an idea of this "department" then you can decide who is the head of that department and their eligibility for an award. However, there is something that I think the article missed. Yes, you have a stunt coordinator whom you could give the award to, but what about the stunt person themselves? We give best acting awards to the actors, not to the casting agents, so why should a stunt coordinator get an Oscar over the person who actually did the stunt?
