Regional Spotlight: How Primary Stages is Working Through the Global Health Crisis

www.broadwayworld.com: Now more than ever it is important to support theater and do our part to keep the art form that we love so much alive and as thriving as it can be during these unprecedented times. While the global health crisis has temporarily put the theater world on hold, pausing all live performances and large gatherings to help stop the spread of COVID-19, theaters around the country have taken a hit.

This situation that we currently find ourselves in gives regional theatre a really good chance to take stock in the value that they add to a community and what they offer. This is also a good chance for the theatre to look at ways of connecting to new audiences or to reconnect with their current audiences, especially if they have not been to a show in a while. It is amusing when someone asks a direct question and gets everything but a direct answer. Primary Stages was asked if they had plans to bring any previously filmed productions online and they answered about everything else except that. Regional theatres have a perfect opportunity to change the conversation about online streaming. Yes, there are other factors such as residuals, rights, streaming rights and so forth, but we can at least begin to have a conversation about this. If we have learned anything from this pandemic, it is that we have the technology and additional technical abilities to bring streaming theatre into the home, especially the home of those who love the theatre and want to support it, but just can't physically get to the theatre every time to see a new show. This is a perfect opportunity to lead the charge and after reading this interview, I think that Primary Stages blew it.
