Reimagining The Music Of 'Oklahoma!'
www.forbes.com: A vital and visceral production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!,” directed by Daniel Fish, is currently playing at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York. It’s a show loaded with astonishments, not the least being the new musical arrangements for seven-piece band by Daniel Kluger. Mr. Kluger has been nominated for a Tony Award for his work, which partly involved extricating the tunes from Robert Russell Bennett’s beloved original orchestrations.

The revival of the classic musical Oklahoma! features a completely reimagined score, with new orchestrations and arrangements by Daniel Kluger. The production aims to bring a fresh take on the classic musical while still honoring the beloved music and lyrics of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The revival's musical numbers are stripped down and presented in a more intimate, folky style, with a live band playing onstage throughout the show. The iconic songs such as "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "People Will Say We're in Love" have been redone basically. One standout musical number is "The Farmer and the Cowman," which has been transformed into a raucous, foot-stomping hoedown with the cast playing instruments and dancing up a storm which is pretty wild. The production's finale, a reprise of "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," is a stirring and emotional moment that leaves audiences with a sense of hope and optimism and my favorite song in the whole stinkin’ musical. Overall, the music in the 2019 revival of Oklahoma! is a fresh and exciting take on a classic score.
