Drama Queens! Unites Two Generations of Feminist Performers-Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Carnegie Mellon University: When Kristina Straub and Wendy Arons decided to organize a showcase of feminist performance art, they invited artists who influenced them. But they knew it was just as important to build a bridge to a new generation of feminists.

Though I still think CMU has a ways to go as far as being a feminist campus - as do most colleges - I am so proud to see multiple strides being made this year toward a more equal and aware student body, including this one! I have always considered myself a feminist, but it wasn't until last year - when I arrived at CMU and took a Global Feminism & Gender Studies Interp class - that I really started viewing it as a major part of my identity. To me, becoming a feminist was like waking up. The more I learned about feminism, the more I could see the world around me clearly, and the more aware I became of the capabilities it affords me. Feminism is not about declaring yourself more enlightened than those who don't agree with you. That's not equality. Feminism is seeing everyone's faults, ESPECIALLY your own, and using that common ground to be more inclusive, more enabled, more enduring, more together. There is no one correct feminism either, because feminism means something different to every individual, which is why it is so important that productions like this one exist. By bringing together a diverse collection of views, backgrounds, and experiences, the feminist ideas driving all those artists already become vastly richer. I am so excited to see this production, and am grateful to spend every day on a campus that makes me feel stronger for reasons like this one.

I am very excited by the fact that CMU is hosting this feminist gathering of artists. I am more so excited by the two women who are involved in creating and organizing this event. I believe that they have the best interest of our campus in mind for this event. I hope that this event will help progress our campus further into a feminist one. To me, gender equality is just one aspect of feminism. Feminism is progressive and open thinking - something that CMU could use more of campus-wide. I hope that this event pulls more than just the School of Drama audience. I hope this event pulls more than just a CFA audience. I have hope that members from all of CMU's schools will attend. I am excited to see this production and excited that CMU is taking a step in this feminist direction.
