McDonald's Creates a Light Version Of Its Fries For Their New Billboard
Gizmodo: Instead of creating a healthier version for those hoping to indulge guilt-free, McDonald's' new billboard in downtown Chicago uses a set of focused spotlights to create what could be the world's most super-sized order of its famous french fries.

Wow! I have to say I like the light version of the McDonald's fries. Not only is it fun to look at, it can and will make a lot of people hungry. I guess they had to do something different with their advertising with all the competitive burger places around. When I first heard the light version I thought low calorie fries were here, but no such luck. I think this will be fun for the kids of all ages to come and see. French fries are definitely not the healthiest food choices around, but if I am going to splurge on some McDonald's fries I may as well do it in style! Bring on the lights!
What an interesting way to advertise your product. If definitely brings attention to your company and what you are selling. For McDonald's this is a very cool looking billboard displaying their fries in a new and exciting manner. As Page mentions, if you are going to splurge on fries, do it in style. This definitely adds some style points to McDonald's, who in recent is trying to re-brand to a more sophisticated audience, now offering Starbucks-inspired lounges at many establishment as well as new "fancy" drink items. Maybe the way to go is instead with lights!
Oh no, I missed the 2 am rule. Fail.
When I read the article title before clicking the link I found myself gearing up for a story on how McDonalds has once again rounded up there legion of food focused Dr. Frankensteins to once again work their magic and create a new food abomination. The light display is interesting an all, but I think the article said it best when they commented on how this has been done before, and it was done for the World Trade Center. It's nice looking and all, but it just seems a little bit weird that McDonalds puts this much effort into a billboard.
It's disappointing to me that this is how McDonald's is using there money. I mean, let's be honest, I never truly held the respect for McDonald's but I just in awe that they would go to this length of technological jizzing to get the attention they want. They should be using their time and money trying to fight American obesity by purchasing healthier ingredients and less chemically engineered products for their consumers.
I also loved how the last paragraph of this article compared this light show to that of the World Trade Center tribute. Classic.
This is so creative! And what's best about it is that it's a reminder that there is a McDonald's right near where you are. Say what you want about the company (though it's a great guilty pleasure), but this advertising is really, really smart.
I like the mixed use of media in the billboard. It's creative and different for what we normally see in billboard advertising. I'd really like to see this in person.
I think that this is a very creative and fun way for McDonalds to advertize. It defiantly makes me want to have some fries. The advertising is simple but yet very unique and effective. Although when I first read the title and I thought the meant light as in better for you and I was excited so I was a little sad when I found out that it was electronic lights. However I did still think that whoever came up with the idea to make this billboard was awesome
McDonalds doesn't have the best fries, actually, but that's a comment for another post...
This is a clever use of something we've been using for advertising for decades, but I wonder about its implications for the future of advertising: if other companies follow suit, and perhaps some day exploring the use of projections/holograms, there will be continued light pollution and sensory overload. Searchlights everywhere will functionally be the same as searchlights no where, just really annoying.
In the mean time, kudos to McDonalds.
I think that is a great way to advertise McDonald's fries. McDonald's is more or less synonymous with fast food. Trying to show photos of how awesome their fries are doesn't seem to me like it would do much good. It also gives them a geographic presence in the city, similar to the Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh. That geographic presence also helps make it more “convenient” to find/go to McDonald's.
I really love this idea!! What a clever, creative, innovative, and original way to advertise a very recognizable and iconic product. We have all seen McDonald’s fries everywhere, always the same way. This is a completely new twist that remains true to the original tone and mood people have come to expect from McDonald’s. This ad is fun, exciting, emcompasses those recognizable colors, shapes, and of course, the double golden arches. The lights that look like fries add a kind of retro concert lighting feel, or a totally new techy vibe, depending on how you look at it. Either way, this was a great idea and a perfect move for the brand. I have noticed more and more advertising that really utilizes lighting, such as the colorful Spotify ads, and Apple has used lighting forever. Hopefully companies will keep this up so that creative lighting designers will have plenty of fun, interesting jobs in the future!
