Chicago Tribune: Steppenwolf Theatre Company hosted its eighth annual Women in the Arts luncheon Feb. 6 at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel. Over 250 guests, many from Chicago's civic, business and arts communities, enjoyed an in-depth conversation with Tony Award-winning actress, stage director and singer Phylicia Rashad.

I have literally never read something about this woman that wasn't overwhelmingly positive. She seems like a a pure force as a performer and in her everyday life. I think something I find to be really interesting about a lot of actors is that they speak about their upbringing, and their exposure to art as though it was the catalyst for their entire career. It seems pretty obvious that when you are exposed to something, you are more likely to end up doing it, but I do feel like we don't spend enough time thinking about how to get the arts to more children. I very distinctly remember the first time that I saw a show and decided that I wanted to do theater. I was seven. It is really important for kids to be exposed to the arts, because there are a lot of really amazing people who miss falling in love with something solely because they aren't around it. I am a big fan of Rashad, I am a big fan of women in the arts, and I am big fan that the program was meant to fund managers and producers rather than actors because we need love too.
