“Daddy Long Legs” at the Pittsburgh Public Theater

The Pittsburgh Tatler: “Jane Eyre meets Beauty and the Beast meets My Fair Lady meets You’ve Got Mail.”

That’s what I imagine the pitch might be for the enjoyably predictable – yet also oddly idiosyncratic – meet-cute plot of the musical Daddy Long Legs.

I am always a sucker for period pieces especially those which are musicals. I find that in these times of trial in our political atmosphere we really need this kind of early feminist literature. It can be really powerful and i think that these kinds of musical adaptations are the perfect vessel for getting them out to the general public. The story is really interesting and im curious to see how self aware the play is. Because it seems that this story could go in a very different direction without careful attention given to character. This is not a story that hasn't been told before as the article points out it has many flavors shared by other works. Great expectations comes to my mind first. Despite this i cant call to mind a recent play or musical with all the wonderful aspects that this seems to bring to the table. I am excited to see this production.
