‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ will eclipse ‘Abie’s Irish Rose’ as third-longest-running play in Broadway history
www.broadwaynews.com: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will achieve a new landmark. At the 7 p.m. performance on Sept. 1, the 2018 Best Play Tony Award winner will become Broadway’s third-longest-running non-musical play.

I have never read any of the Harry Potter books and have only watched movies one through four and seven part one, so I am not a big fan of the material but I do understand the childhood magic that the first movie captures so well. I’ve heard great things about that magic in the effects of the play and so I can understand why it was so popular in its beginning. It does surprise me though how long this show has lasted, as Harry Potter is a huge IP I wouldn’t have guessed it would stand the test of time. I still have not seen this show, even though the technical aspects interest me greatly, I feel like I may not have the knowledge based on the world and the characters to truly appreciate it. But happy for its success and hope the cast and crew feel proud of their accomplishments!
This is very impressive and I see why it has claimed this title! This play's technology was genuinely the most impressive I’ve ever seen. I really enjoyed watching this, and would see it again just for the technology. It’s also understandable why it moved up. It’s one of the only “Showbill” musicals on Broadway, which means it's very kid friendly. Its IP is bigger and more well known than any broadway show, including when it opened. Everyone in the world knows harry potter, and when a Harry Potter fan goes to Universal, they flock towards the wizarding world, the same type of concept exists for this show, harry potter fans flock to go see the show because they’re big fans. I wouldn’t say its the story keeping this play open, it’s known to be poorly written and I didn’t enjoy it too much, nor did anyone else I see it with. It’s a combination of the technology and the fan base Harry Potter already has.
It does not surprise me how long Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has run. I saw Harry Potter and the Cursed Child without ever reading the books or seeing the movies but I was surprised by how easily and quickly I followed. The theatrical felt like I was watching a musical with no sung music. There were cool special effects and fantastic props and stage tricks every three minutes. I really love over the top scenes with such smart uses of misdirection for every stunt. I imagine making the props for this show was really cool as it seemed every other object did something magical. I also really love the use of projection; sometimes I think projections get in the way of productions but in this case projections were used to make the set look warped and for magical stunts to be more believable. I hope this show runs for a long time to continue to entertain audiences.
This is not surprising at all, when I was a kid Harry Potter and The Cursed Child was one of the very first plays I ever read, I didn't even realize at the time it was supposed to be preformed I just thought it was another way to write a book. I have never seen Harry Potter and The Cursed Child but I know lots of people who have and I have heard mostly good things. I know there are some controversies with the people cast in the London production which lowers peoples interest in seeing the show all together but I haven't heard anything bad about the broadway version.
Wow! I had no idea it had been that long since this show opened but I guess it makes sense because I remember talking about it when I was in middle school. I also had no idea this would be even close to something in the running for being the longest running show. But I guess I always think about shows like Phantom that ran for what feels like forever. I think there is definitely something there about plays vs musicals. But I think it makes sense when I stop to think about it. I have never seen the show but from what I have heard it seems like it is well done across the board and of course it is going to draw people in because it is such a well loved series across all generations. I would love to see this show sometime and I am grateful it appears like I will have plenty of time to do that.
