With video walls and projections becoming a more prevalent part of our industry, I hadn’t considered how download time could impact changeovers. Since fewer physical elements now need to be moved between artists or shows, we’re entering an interesting era where technology can transform the scenery without changing the stage itself. However, with large file sizes and the rendering demands of current systems, we have to account for the time it takes for the technology to be show-ready. It adds a layer of complexity that invokes a few important questions: As media design becomes central to live events, will we see new consoles capable of storing multiple shows to reduce download time? Will we start to see console changeovers because it might just be faster to change consoles? How can we ensure smooth, reliable downloads in fast-paced environments? And will physical set pieces remain essential—not just for aesthetics, but to buy time during digital transitions?
