Designing An FM Drum Synth From Scratch

Hackaday: [Moritz Klein]’s journey down the analog drum machine rabbit hole started with a Roland TR-909, a hybrid drum machine from the mid-80s that combined sampled sounds with analog synthesis. The unit [Moritz] picked up was having trouble with the decay on the kick drum, so he spread out the gloriously detailed schematic and got to work.

I was immediately drawn to this article because of the title and the subject that it was going to tackle. I have always been somewhat musical, playing the guitar, piano, and participating in choir. This has definitely led me to being a lot more musically inclined than I would normally be. Pairing this with my interest in sound makes for a real attraction to instruments and recording equipment. I think this is such a cool idea for someone to build a synth from scratch that is completely analog and function on its own. I love mechanics and electrics, and it was something that I would have studied if I hadn’t chosen drama instead. I think it would be such a cool project over the summer for me to try to build something like this and just get more hands on experience with sound things and electrics so that I can keep building my skills in all forms of electronics and sound equipment.
