THE PRINCESS BRIDE Musical to Have 'Substantial Workshop' Later This Year
www.broadwayworld.com: Bob Martin and Rick Elice, book writers for Broadway's Smash, have given an update on their long-awaited musical adaptation of The Princess Bride. In an interview with Variety, Martin revealed that the show is actively in the works, also providing a time frame for a major workshop taking place later this year.

This could be really exciting, Princess Bride is such a good movie. I really hope they don't mess this up. I think it's meant to be just a classic old movie, and maybe something we should leave alone. But they said they've been working on it for at least 10 years, so I really hope they do a good job.
The first time I remember watching The Princess Bride was in school in 2nd grade, though I think I had watched it at home before then. A lot of the kids in my class were scared when it got to the scene with the R.O.U.S.'s. It is one of few movies that I would watch again at nearly any given time. Yeah I really hope they don't mess this show up and that and that they have a good cast. But if it turns out to be a well done show, I would like to go see it.
I love this movie so much. I re-watched it for the first time in a while over this winter break, and it really is an almost perfect movie. It's got a good mix of comedy and heart, and I liked it so much upon viewing that I went and read the book, which was just as delightful as the movie. I really hope that this musical will add to this wonderful saga. I can foresee some good ballads from the gentle giant, and a fun-filled action scene with all the fencing. Its just such a goofy vibe, I hope this musical works out, and does not end up being a mediocre adaptation of such a cultural icon. I really hope they keep the same framing device that is present in both the book and the movie. This is a story being told to someone rather than just a stand alone story. The cutaways and footnotes are some of my favorite parts of The Princess Bride, and I hope that the musical finds a clever way of including them.
Woah. Another Broadway adaptation or Workshop of a classic movie like one of the best movies ever to exist in my opinion being worked into a musical and I don't know how I feel about this. I feel like The Princess Bride is such a dramatic and serious movie with obvious bits of Comedy so I don't know about how I feel like an actor randomly breaking into a song but like it's still in It's like work shopping phase so it doesn't really mean anything yet I mean it does. but I'm very very curious to see where this musical Workshop ends up and I don't really know how I feel yet about this as a musical I mean like I don't know I'm Back to the Future was such a classic and I did not like musical adaptation so I'm just I'm very curious to see how they would do a musical adaptation on such a classic movie like The Princess Bride.
I love The Princess Bride so much. It is one of my favorite movies of all time, and my family and I quote the entire movie to each other all the time. I really hope that the people who are taking the time to adapt this do take the time to adapt this well. the article mentioned that they have been working on this for 10 years, which is a good sign in my books because it means that it is a passion project, but I just hope but it doesn't end up being a cash grab, or something that ends up detracting from the original Source material since the original Source material is already so good on its own. I'm curious to see how they would make it into a musical, though. Something about the idea of a song about rodents of unusual sizes feels odd in a way that I can't explain. Maybe it’s just the attachment to the original.
I am very intrigued by the promise of a musical adaptation of The Princess Bride. It is such a fun, unserious, and sentimental movie and I think it would work perfectly as a musical. I am also relieved to hear that this has been, and probably will continue to be, a long process. The time taken to write this should be long and stretched out, not a process that is rushed out of public excitement and monetary prospects. And, I know this is a very long way in the future, but I do also wonder how the production and its design would work as well. The movie features a variety of different settings, including sprawling hillside/mountainside picturesque landscapes, dense forests, and a boat on the water, and so I wonder how these could all be translated on stage in a way that honours the movie, is cost effective, and doesn’t look tacky. I also wonder how all of the fight scenes can be executed safely every night without looking fake or staged. However, overall, I am very excited to see this project and where it goes next!
The decision to adapt The Princess Bride is one that I personally see as extremely risky. The Princess Bride is such a widely loved piece of media, and a definite cult classic. It has such an incredibly unique humor that I worry about being accurately translated to the stage. I personally have a lot of memories where I am watching that movie with family. My family has also stolen a lot of quotes from that movie. However, despite my worries, I would still absolutely make it a point to go to this musical. The Princess Bride Musical is something that could be an extremely successful and entertaining Broadway show if done correctly. I would be super happy if they gave Fezzik and Inigo Montoya solos. With Fezzik's ability to rhyme, I think he would have an incredible song. And who doesn't love Inigo Montoya? He is a character that absolutely needs a solo song. I am sure that it would immediately go viral.
