"The Pillars of the Earth": The Evolution of Spanish Musical Theatre. An exclusive interview with Iván Macías. Part I

The Theatre Times: In November 2024, the world premiere of a new musical by composer Iván Macías, The Pillars of the Earth, took place at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía in Madrid. The book, written by Félix Amador, is based on the bestselling novel by Ken Follett of the same name.

This article caught my attention because “The Pillars of the Earth” is the name of a television series that featured a lot of historical costumes. I have never seen the series, but I remember examining images of the costumes when I was working on a garment in the approximate time period. As I read this article, I realized that the musical is based on the same book as the series was, which I was unaware existed. I really liked that this article not only talked about “The Pillars of the Earth”, but also the history of dramatic musicals in Spain. I am unfamiliar with the topic and honestly had never thought about Spanish musicals before, so I was interested in the interview answers that Macias gave. What stuck out to me the most was the inclusion of theatrical seasons in Spanish theatre, unlike Broadway. I wonder how much that affects tourism, and local audience engagement.

This article reminded me how low profile a lot of the work we do is. Unless it is a highly popular and commercially successful show on Broadway or the West End, it doesn’t seem to get any press attention.
