The Kennedy Center: A View From Backstage by Mary Hess, Member I.A.T.S.E. Stagehands
www.dailykos.com: Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and Jean-Marc Natel’s Musical Theatre Production of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables were all written in the spirit of freedom and humanity.
They all “opened” at The Kennedy Center which promotes “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” in the United States and around the world.

While the title of the article suggests that this would be about how I.A.T.S.E. stage hands have been navigating the recent situation at the Kennedy Center, in fact the article instead details a storied history of the Kennedy Center itself including important performances that they have staged, important performers that have been involved with the organization, and how the Kennedy Center came to be such a prominent part of the theater community. This history is incredibly detailed and informative, and as such, it demonstrates why recent actions from the current Administration have been especially upsetting and surprising to the standard mode of operations for the Kennedy Center – a space which has for so long been rooted in freedom, artistic expression, and nonpartisanship, now seemingly in the hands of individuals who may no longer stand for these values. This marks a dramatic shift in the operation of the Kennedy Center and will surely leave a tarnish on it’s history which will hopefully one day be rectified.
