As an undergraduate art student I can understand the concern over the impact that a degree will have but I believe that measuring impact purely by income is a shortsighted measure. After all, if we wanted to purely maximize economic output per dollar spent on education every student should be going through trade school rather than traditional colleges. And while trades are important I believe that most would agree that society benefits from scientists and engineers. However, it is harder to quantify the benefit of the arts. And because we cannot put a number to the amount of good that the arts has done for society it is simpler to presume that art does little for society and is simply a "nice to have". The good that art does for society should not be ignored because we cannot ascribe a dollar value to it. As such art students should have the same opportunity to take out student loans as other students.
