AI-Enhanced Version of 'The Wizard of Oz' at the Sphere Could Pull in $1 Billion
gizmodo.com: The biggest blockbuster of the summer came out 86 years ago. While some people balk at the idea of paying $12 to catch a film that’ll be on streaming platforms a month later, apparently thousands of folks are flocking to the Sphere in Las Vegas and dropping about $200 a ticket to watch The Wizard of Oz, according to a report from Bloomberg. The film is reportedly grossing about $2 million per day from its showtimes on just one (very large) screen.

I am really enjoying this ongoing arc of 'The Wizard of Oz" at the spere in Las Vegas. In my previous posts about this movie being shown at the spere I have been really excited about the concept. Despite that after reading this article I can see that my initial thoughts were off based. I was not aware that the Spere was using AI to touch up most of the movie. It would be one thing to have a digital artist touch up the movie and add the elements that the AI is adding, as I am sure that the artist would strive to maintain the image that the original work created. Instead there is an AI that is arbitrarily adding elements just to fill up space, and based on the image that is shown these additions are majorly distracting. When compared to the focus of the movie on the screen. Knowing that the spere is going to use AI to make old or classic movies fit into the sphere is actually a really scary concept that has the potential to destroy peoples perceptions of classic works of art.
This is absolutely wild to me! The fact that a movie from 1939 is going to gross $1 Billion dollars in 2025 is crazy. I absolutely love immersive entertainment, and hope to be able to make it to the sphere one day. I feel like doing immersive entertainment will be the Sphere’s specialty, as the venue has an insanely large amount of screen real estate. I am usually against the use of AI in creative applications, however I feel differently about this case. I believe that it’s wrong to use AI in creative applications when it could be taking a human's job away, in an already extremely competitive industry. In addition, I don’t think that AI can think as critically as humans can and make creative choices to the depth that a professional level production requires. However, I think AI is a great tool to assist artists. This is a perfect example, where AI helped to upscale an older film to make it immersive for the Sphere!
