Disney Cruise Line Is Enhancing Entertainment Through Storytelling And Technology
www.forbes.com: The Disney Destiny, Disney Cruise Line’s seventh cruise ship, will launch later this year. The vessel is themed around the stories of heroes and villains. One story that will be performed inside the Walt Disney Theater is Disney Hercules, a Broadway-style retelling of the classic animated film. The show will feature larger-than-life musical numbers, puppets, cutting-edge technology and more to bring new energy to the stage adaptation of Hercules.

Theatre on Cruise-Lines is such a big part of the industry that I often forget about. I often see that cruises will put up a random show as entertainment for guest when they are out on sea for long stretches, however Disney makes it not only a pass time but its own unique one of a kind experience. I have read a few other articles on the new Disney cruise line, however I did not know it was themed heroes versus villains until this one. I think that Hercules fits perfectly into that theme. With its name sake literally coming from ancient stories of gods the theatrical aspect needed to be larger than life. The exo-skeleton puppets are remarkble to look at; the renderings as well as the rehearsal puppets. I really appreciate how imagineers are using new technology to work with actors rather than using technology to replace actors.
ReplyDeleteWhen I decided I wanted to pursue theatre professionally, I looked into online forums on how the career looked for a full time theatre tech. Surprisingly, a lot of people recommended getting a job on a cruise ship. They said it was a more steady job as opposed to a union member on regular shows.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never seen Hercules, or been to any of Disney’s theme parks, resorts, or cruises. But this seems great! It greatly impresses me how complex they are able to make theatre on a boat! I would have never thought that flying rigs and huge puppets could be possible.
I’d love to work with large scale puppets like the “earth Titan” and “frost Titan.” I think that puppets can help recreate the movie magic Disney boasts in person. I’d like to look at a video to see how the puppets move, and how that limits (or expands) blocking opportunities.
