An Audience Member at Redwood Donated $10K to Broadway Cares to Sing With Idina Menzel

Playbill: What would you give to sing a Rent duet with Idina Menzel herself? One audience member donated $10,000 to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for the honor at a recent performance of Redwood, according to a fellow theatregoer’s Reddit post (where the ad-hoc performance was posted in full). Menzel sang "Take Me Or Leave Me" with the two fans, a song she performed when she originated the role of Maureen in Rent on Broadway—at the Nederlander Theatre, where she is currently performing in Redwood.

Wow! 10k donation to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and a chance to sing with Idina Menzel?! I think that this is a great way to raise money for such a great cause. Not only is it helping the people who need it, it is being done in a way that creates happiness and inspires joy, which is really priceless. I wonder how it affected people in the audience that night and if it inspired other audience members to make generous donations as well. The ways that productions have been adapting and changing their methods to encourage donations is great as it only helps those in need. The idea of singing Rent with Idina Menzel on stage or being in the presence of Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel as they sing “For Good” is something that is so exciting to a theatre fan, and if it can actually be used for good (pun intended), that is something even more exciting and magical.
