Keeping it 'Dirty'

chicagotribune.com: "The folks who thought to make 'Dirty Dancing' into a stage musical knew what they were doing--this thing has been giving its fans chills, laughs and tears for decades. On the eve of the pre-Broadway tour's opening at the Cadillac Palace this weekend, we've got 10 reasons why we still love 'Dirty Dancing.'"

What seems different to me about this particular movie-to-musical musical is that the original movie lacks that novelty and kitsch in my opinion. i think movies like xanadu and shrek and legally blonde, have a certain silliness and kitsch that somehow justify making them into a musical. a more serious movie like dirty dancing, although a romantic comedy still, i think will have a different success on broadway.

I didn't realize how iconic Dirty Dancing was for a generation (or continues to be). Sure, I can't hear "Time of My Life" without thinking of the movie and, yes, I've made the casual reply that "no one puts baby in the corner." But to continue to sell millions of copies? If the show can stay true to the movie then the people will be pouring in. I usually bitch on here how movies are always being made into musicals but the amount of money these people will probably make once it sweeps the U.S. is going to be a nice Christmas bonus.

I really did not know what to think when i read this headline...normally movie-to-musicals are usually pretty sketchy and are loose cannons for producers, however this adaptation seems like it has a fighting chance. Dirty dancing is quite the classic and definitely a crowd pleaser so its not too hard to see why the producers chose to go through with this. Plus if the musical has already had quite a lot of success abroad then its reception in the US should be positive! I'm looking forward to see the outcome!

This production has some pretty complex staging. I'm interested to see how it melds with the choreography. The LED screen in the back is also interesting because it set's locale away from the Adirondack landscape, but I wonder how it melds with that setting itself.
