Higher art

The Boston Globe: "This is an era of what could be called the 'visual intellectual.' Students on college campuses and members of the general public flock to hear - and see - addresses by filmmakers, artists, and performers. Cultural attention, and cultural primacy, have shifted to encompass art installations, the moving image, technology, and performance. Phrases like 'visual literacy,' 'aural literacy,' 'digital literacy,' and 'media literacy' are increasingly common."

This brings up some very interesting points and some of the issues I have with conservatory programs. While I love CMU and the drama program here, sometimes I find myself missing problem sets. There have to be better ways to integrate the arts and the traditional institutions of education. Ideally, craft versus academia should not be an issue.

it's a good article to explain what we do and what we want to do. i still do feel sometimes whenever i explain what i study people would think and speak less of me for studying somehting not intrinsically academic. i mean, i have absolute confidence in what i do, but it makes me a little uneasy to havethem feel that way about me.
