I know that every time I compose an e-mail to someone, regarding something other than a simple hello to a friend, I am always tentative as to how it should be written. After I write it I generally look at it and think - is this too informal? or is this too formal? Certainly the subject line is extremely important. Whether to initially know what an e-mail is about, or for finding it at a later date among the masses of e-mails in your inbox. As far as length - while there is the temptation to write an incredibly long and thorough e-mail, I've got to be realistic and realize that this person will NOT read this entire e-mail. Or if it's urgent, they certainly won't read it right away. When I get a ridiculously long e-mail, I generally do not read it immediately, and then risk forgetting about it and never reading it at all. There are definitely some good tips to keep in mind on this site.
