The Washington Post: The Kennedy Center began layoffs on Thursday, initiating the first wave of anticipated cuts tied to President Donald Trump’s plan to shut down the institution for two years.
Multiple departments were affected — including programming, development, advertising, marketing and the office of the president — according to multiple people at the center who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss personnel matters.
What I found most interesting about this article was the use of the term, “takeover.” I say the same thing again and again when I read Kennedy Center articles, but this is the first that really addressed the issue at hand in a way that felt real, something that scares people in the way it should. The people appointed to lead the Kennedy Center operation were just pawns, it does not matter how loyal they were to the cause. This is an important highlight. Additionally, this use of the phrase takeover very casually accepts what I believe the history books will tell better than the current American population; we are witnessing a fall of democracy in the U.S. the way this impacts art are to be expected, the signs are there, the signs aren’t new, we’re the frogs in the pot of boiling water and let me tell you, the water is surely boiling by now. The Kennedy Center is just a very small part of all of this, and I think it is highly important to stay politically aware in the current state of our country.
