Into the Woods, Paddington, More Win U.K. Critics' Circle Theatre Awards; Read the Full List of Winners
Playbill: Winners of the 2026 Critics' Circle Theatre Awards were revealed March 26 at an afternoon ceremony at London's National Theatre, with the current West End revival of All My Sons and Bridge Theatre's Into the Woods emerging as the most-honored productions. The coveted Best New Musical Award went to Paddington The Musical, while Best New Play went to James Graham's Punch.

When I first saw the title of the article, I immediately clicked on it out of pleasant surprise. I was unaware that Paddington had been turned into a musical. Watching Paddington is a core memory I have with my grandparents, so I am excited to look more into this production. However, I have strong emotions about existing pieces being adapted into musicals. For instance, in the case Stranger Things, The Notebook, Gatsby, and now Paddington (and many others) are all productions of varying degree, but I personally believe that they provide a sort of disservice to the source material; literature adaptations especially. Don’t get me wrong, they are amazing productions, like Gatsby has such amazing lighting and staging, but the book has so many nuances that had to be simplified for the flow of the musical. In having to adapt the storyline, key components often become misrepresented – like Nick’s confusion about his sexuality in Gatsby.
