When I first heard about this show when I was watching D23 remotely a few years ago, I was highly skeptical that Zootopia would work within Animal Kingdom, much less within the Tree of Life. Unfortunately, it seems that I was correct. In an effort to drive up attendance at Animal Kingdom, Disney has injected a popular intellectual property into the park’s icon, fundamentally hurting the storytelling that was so painstakingly crafted when the park was being developed in the late 90s. I understand the economic imperative in bringing more people into the park, however, this is not the way to do it. This new show has not really paid respects to what was there before, and that is really quite disappointing to me as someone who frequents the Disney parks. Also, with imminent major expansion on the way, in the form of the Tropical Americas themed land, this development just seems out of place. Tropical Americas is at least trying to stay somewhat grounded within the park’s original vision, and Zootopia is so painfully disappointing because it does not.
