Howard Sherman on Masquerade and Andrew Lloyd Webber

www.thestage.co.uk: The Andrew Lloyd Webb-aissance rolls on. Following such highlights as Jamie Lloyd’s Sunset Boulevard in London and New York, Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl, the ballroom Cats at Performing Arts Center NYC and Lloyd’s Evita in the West End, the latest entry is set up not in a theatre, but in a four-story, former art supply shop down the block from Carnegie Hall in New York.

This production sounds absolutely awesome! As I have stated before, immersive theatre is my favorite art form of all time! I love how Masquerade is pushing the boundaries of what musical theatre can be. In a time where theatre and the arts are struggling, this is exactly what we need! Andrew Lloyd Webber is on a generational revival run! We just had the iconic revival of Sunset Boulevard, Masquerade, a national tour of Phantom of the Opera, Evita in the West End, and Cats The Jellicle Ball is opening on Broadway soon! After Phantom doing its thing on Broadway for years and years, It’s so refreshing to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work reimagined in a way that highlights collaboration and innovation rather than relying only on that nostalgia. The intimacy of this production is next level, being able to touch the characters and have them guide you through their world adds a whole other layer of emotion!
