Interact with OK Go's Innovative Open-Source Animated Music Video for 'Impulse Purchase'
Colossal: Known for their innovative music videos and dance-worthy tracks, OK Go knows the power of great visuals. Coordination is often the name of the game, from the viral treadmills in “Here It Goes Again” to 64 synced and choreographed smartphones in “A Stone Only Rolls Downhill.” For their latest release, “Impulse Purchase,” the group turned to another means of collaboration: open-source animation.

I love the bright colors and use of shapes in Ok, Go’s animated music video for their song “Impulse Purchase”. The coloring is eye catching, lending to the brightness of the song and its speed. There is also a variety in color, especially in the scenes of crowds, that creates a chaotic but connected atmosphere. This also relates to the use of shapes. Because everyone is made out of similar shapes, they seem to exist in the same, unified world. While emphasising the oddity of this world, there is also a unity that makes it more interesting than just plain odd. To mention the shapes again, I also want to say that this style is super fun. I love the use of geometry to suggest forms and to simplify how complicated humans and their movements are. I recently bought a print from a local Pittsburgh artist that explored the objects and people around them in simplified shapes and colors.
