www.bbc.com/news: What comes to mind when you think of a big fat Indian wedding?
Dazzling lights, glittering outfits, Bollywood hits, a lavish spread of food and an atmosphere soaked in celebration. Everything feels extravagant, emotional and larger than life.
The idea of fake weddings sounds fun! I have Indian relatives who have been to weddings in India, and I've heard about how extravagant they can be. There are often multiple ceremonies, dinner parties, and other events in the week leading up to the main wedding, then the wedding which can last for hours, and then after parties. It seems exciting. I can totally understand why someone would want to take part in one, especially if they hadn’t before.
ReplyDeleteA main point that was brought up was that these fake weddings took away the stress of a real Indian wedding. From my experiences, traditions are emphasized in these events, and straying from them can be looked down upon. I think its great when younger generations stretch the boundaries of traditional practices.
I do think it's important to be respectful of the original tradition. I’m surprised that more of the article wasn’t about criticism from older generations.
