ChatGPT’s new Study Mode is designed to help you learn, not just give answers

Ars Technica: The rise of large language models like ChatGPT has led to widespread concern that "everyone is cheating their way through college," as a recent New York magazine article memorably put it. Now, OpenAI is rolling out a new "Study Mode" that it claims is less about providing answers or doing the work for students and more about helping them "build [a] deep understanding" of complex topics.

As AI becomes more integrated into our daily lives, it’s important to think carefully about how we want to use it. Sometimes with OpenAI databases the information it has accumulated is at times incorrect. That’s why I think it would be useful to have a tool that only uses the source materials provided, unless the user specifically allows it to draw from other sources. This would give people more control over the information they’re being taught. Personally, I don’t use AI very often—usually only when I’ve hit a wall or when I need a general starting point for research. But as the article points out, the idea of a “24/7 tutorbot” could be really powerful. If done right, AI could explain concepts in different ways to match a person’s individual learning style. I believe AI will inevitably become part of education, and the key will be finding ways to limit and tailor the source material that students feed into it. That way, both learners and educators can feel confident that the information is accurate, relevant, and truly supportive of learning.
