The Entire World in One Body

HowlRound Theatre Commons: For the last couple of decades, I have been asking myself: How do you put a community on stage? How do you convey interconnectedness and reciprocity? How do you show that individual happiness, health, and resilience are functions of community? In our hyper-individualistic society, it is easy to focus inward and forget that we are mere nodes in an intricate, living, breathing web of relationships.

  1. I have been having a lot of conversations recently about the best strategy of storytelling that will showcase the most vulnerable stories in a way that has a large reach. Some people argue that the way to have a big reach is to make a big expensive commercial theatre. Which I am sure is true, look at disney shows. But I think that is a totally different conversation. Like sure if you want to reach a lot of people throw a lot of money at it and make it big and flash. Everyone will show up. But in my opinion those shoes do not really reach people in terms of vulnerability and deep themes. I like that this article connected a solo show to how our society functions. It is true we are all about ourselves so I think the logic of using a show with only one person in it is really intriguing to me. Not only does it strip down the show and make it something very simple but it also works with how our society functions to create a deeper connection. I do not know how I would feel working on a one person show but I think I would learn a lot doing it.
