'Some Like It Hot' Musical Swings Into Pittsburgh
onstagepittsburgh.com: Some Like It Hot is a movie with music that swings, and the musical based on the movie takes that to heart. Set in the Prohibition era, the stage production dances and sings its way from beginning to end with the feeling of a big, bygone Hollywood musical gone live.
That’s not to say the Tony-nominated transfer to the stage doesn’t reflect modern times, as Pittsburghers will see when Some Like It Hot comes to the Benedum Center for a week, starting Tuesday, April 15.

Some Like it Hot is one of my favorite new musicals to have opened in recent years. The Broadway show combined the work of scenic designer Scott Pask with costume designer Gregg Barnes and choreographer Casey Nicholaw (my favorites of their respective fields). In the cast, they are joined by Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, and Adrianna Hicks as Joe/Josephine, Jerry/Daphne, and Sugar Kane, respectively. Pask’s over-the-top, glitzy Art Deco inspired sets paired perfectly with Barnes’s extremely intricate, highly embellished ensemble costumes. Both served Nicholaw’s choreography perfectly—my absolute favorite number came near the end of act two when Nicholaw choreographed a minutes-long chase scene (complete with spinning doors and costume changes) done entirely in tap dance. I’m so glad to see the Some Like it Hot tour is doing as well as the Broadway production, and I wish I had a chance to see it when it comes through Pittsburgh!
