Light Up the Night With DJI’s First Spotlight for Multi-Payload Drone Platforms

No Film School: While DJI might just be set to remain in a constant state of flux with possible sanctions (or perhaps tariffs) hanging over its sales and operations in the United States, the Chinese-based drone company remains as busy as ever, announcing several new drones, gimbals, and other innovative drone-related products.

  1. I have always been very curious about the use of drones in live entertainment and where their role really lies, whether its something scenery based, or lighting based. This article is definitely pushing me more towards lighting, what is a spot light drone if not a more advanced mover? I am very curious though on what situations you would absolutely have to use this over a typical moving light? Unless someone is doing no typical rigging or set up for a performance, I feel like it would probably just be easier to use a normal mover, I could only see a true purpose for this in a completely outdoor venue with absolutely no locations for rigging lights. I also have to wonder how much would the drone be affected by wind? How much would it sway or move with a big gust of wind? I think this is a fantastic technological achievement however I’m not yet certain of the exact functionality of it yet.

It is crazy to think about how far don't technology has come. It used to be only incredibly simple toy rc cars with only two joysticks that you could barely control because it bumbled along no matter how soft your touch was. Now there are drones that link together in swarms of thousands to put on light shows, first person racing drones that can maneuver at the slightest touches through incredibly tight corners and rebounds. It is also very useful to be able to get that overhead view and assistance with any night time searches, repairs, and other time critical tasks. It also doesn't have the massive fuel needs because it is not as big as a helicopter needing to support a massive metal frame and pilots or passengers. With drones already testing to deliver packages to our door and being able to reach spots that are not safe for human life the technology continues to advance incredibly.
