Imax Revenue Jumps 10% to $87 Million in First Quarter on Record Success of 'Ne Zha 2'
TheWrap: The first quarter of the 2025 box office was a poor one for American theaters, but Imax was able to avoid taking a hit in their Q1 earnings thanks in good part to the record-smashing success of the animated sequel “Ne Zha 2” in China.
I’ve always found it detrimental to the film industry that most American theaters historically do not show films from outside of the US. I have noticed an increased public interest in Korean dramas, Japanese anime, and more media that is created outside of the US in the last decade. It seems to be millennials and Gen Z who are more likely to consume foreign media, especially a lot of my classmates in high school and college. It seems that American theaters are not cashing in on this interest, as I rarely see foreign films being shown or advertised on any scale. When I read this article I found it very symbolic that Ne Zha 2 and its predecessor have no presence in the US, as far as I can tell. This particular film may not be a good example, but I think that given the exposure, most American audiences would enjoy seeing foreign films.
