What’s Next in Lighting? The Most Innovative Moving Heads from LDI

Church Production Magazine: In the AVL world, we only see leaps in innovation occasionally. Most years, the new products that come out are just improvements on last year’s model or a more powerful version of features we’ve already seen. However, this past December at LDI, there were a handful of lighting fixtures that seemed to change or at least challenge the typical mindset of lighting design with moving head instruments. Let’s hit briefly on three of the most notable product launches.

As someone who isn't as well versed in the Innovations and lighting technology and how they dramatically shift our capacity to design for theater and other live entertainment, it was helpful to hear the author's perspective on how recent innovations that debuted at LDI in December may have made quite dramatic changes in how we can do lighting for live entertainment. In particular, the first light which allows for a more seamless use of lighting with projections due to the higher control with more digital programming of the fixture really seems to have great potential for expanding what we can do with lighting. While other features were not quite as apparent as to their use, seeing that innovations are happening nonetheless remains exciting. Further, an artifact of the article that was similarly interesting was that for each fixture there was a dedicated portion for how it may help church events and programming, demonstrating that church programming is a massive portion of the lighting and sound industry especially in the context of mega churches.

I'm very shocked that these are all super beautiful lights. The first thing I looked at was obviously the movers, which are always very nice and new and expensive, so it is very exciting that we're getting some new movers from LDI. I mean they look beautiful, they look like they are individually controllable pixels, which is super cool. but super cool is the high-end systems zeo, Which looks like a combination of a curved reflector and a square one kind of in a way, and it looks very cool and very beautiful and very new so I'm very intrigued on how this would look when you're lighting a set or a person or a thing. I think this is the light that intrigued me the most it just looks very beautiful and it looks like you can be sort of multiple colors at once so I don't know how that LED technology works for that but it absolutely looks stunning and would be my first choice if I were letting a show honestly.
