RuPaul’s Drag Race Producers Set Their Sights on Broadway

www.thewrap.com: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” may currently be airing its 17th season, but as its Emmy-winning host says in one of her most iconic songs: This is just the beginning. In fact, executive producers and World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato told TheWrap they have Broadway dreams for the reality TV show mainstay while celebrating the 1,000th performance of “RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!” in Las Vegas.

I would go see this in a heartbeat! I spent far too much time watching Rupaul’s Drag Race. I agree that a show like this would bring so much joy and light. We often complain at CMU that all we do is sad shows and I agree, I also think that extends past CMU and into all the other professional settings. We do a lot of sad or heavy shows these days and while they are also good and important I do not think anyone would complain about a little bit more joy. And one could argue that with our current political climate that drag while fun would also be making a statement reaching more audiences that would hopefully see its value and fight against what is trying to be done and said about drag shows. I do not understand how people watch drag shows and feel anything but joy. They had drag queens at USITT and it immediately filled the room with joy and power. So! I love this idea!

Yes. This needs to happen. The energy that’s produced within the room when filming Drag Race is like no other, and I think it being a live event in a place like Broadway would be so rewarding to everyone involved. The performers are so crazy talented. If you’ve ever watched Drag Race, I feel like there’s something to take away from every episode. The energy is crazy infectious and I’m glad that they’re thinking about making it a live experience in NY. So much of drag’s history is in live performance, so taking it back to the roots is good. They even mention how they’re keeping Ru’s little club days in mind when trying to push for this. In times like this, it’s so important that this community is seen and recognized for the talented, hard work they do. Overall, I’m really excited for them and I hope that it all works out.

I remember seeing a live rupaul drag race show in vegas it was so much fun. I know that the live vegas performance have queens from past seasons along with some newer faces come and perform or do little competitions. The competitions in live drag race shows are alot more lip sync, dance, and even singing based rather than full on costume challenges. Im really interested in how these vegas shows would be converted into a broadway show on a larger stage and general production with a longer run time. I wonder if they would just do the same that they are already doing in vegas but maybe with more familiar faces, or if they would have a whole other different plot going on. I wonder if as a broadway show, things will be more plot based rather than a speed ran competition. Regardless, i have more than enough faith it will be absolutely epic.

I started watching RuPaul’s Drag Race over covid and immediately became obsessed. I started with season 5 and live watched season 12 and it really does foster such a fun community of watchers and reviewers of seasons. Although I’ve seen many seasons, I have not watched the show or kept up with it that much in the past few years which I should get back to. Though, I watch a lot of Trixie and Katya content so I do see many of the queens that have passed through, and a few of them have started to star on Droupout and play DND with dimension 20 which is awesome. I think drag on broadway always goes so well together and it would only be natural for them to expand there, I would be interested to know though if it would be more of a live competition or if it would be some kind of actual show with a storyline.

I think it was only a matter of time before shows similar to that of Rupaul and drag shows in general made their way to broadway. Theatre in general is a very large space for the queer community, and it makes sense that drag would eventually end up on par with the publicity and entertainment value of live theatre in the way Broadway has. Rupaul’s drag race has more than enough publicity and good reviews to warrant giving it space on Broadway stages, and frankly I think it would do quite well. I think if someone took a poll, of all of the common broadway theatre-goers and common viewers of Rupaul’s Drag Race, I think we would find that there is quite a bit of an overlap between those two groups. I really hope this does become an actual thing, I love Rupaul’s drag race, and I would love to see it live!

Drag is a key staple of the queer community and fits very well with the over the top extravagant nature of broadway. The idea of a live event somewhat reminds me of the aspect of The Play That Goes Wrong. The Play That Goes Wrong focuses less on having a set storyline and more on entertaining an audience in a comedic nature. A live Drag event I feel would have similar characteristics to a performance and less of a fairy tail like story. It could also be similar to Clue, having different endings depending on the night because it is a competition and keeping the aspect that any one can win allows an audience to get incredibly invested in each performance. Broadway is continuously evolving which allows for new events such as Rupaul's Drag Race Live to break its way into the entertainment industry opening the door for many other interesting live events.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Live being in Las Vegas is something that makes a lot of sense. RuPaul’s Drag Race Live being in New York City, on Broadway, would also make a lot of sense. I think it would be really awesome to have the East Coast version of the iconic show. Having the Las Vegas one as such a long running establishment is really cool, and I think it would be really valuable to have two editions of the show, one on each side of the country. I could definitely see a live event like that fitting really well into the general Broadway lineup, and being a really great opportunity to showcase more talent. With every additional season of Drag Race worldwide, there are more and more all-stars, and I think that sort of ends up creating a demand for more and more performance opportunities. Hopefully, the Broadway edition of Drag Race happens, since it would be very cool.
