Spotlight on American Ballet Theatre Studio Company
Playbill: American Ballet Theatre Studio Company is having a moment. Though the Company’s junior tier has been around since the 1970s, its latest iteration, helmed since 2018 by ABT alum Sascha Radetsky, is soaring to new heights.
I loved hearing that one of the primary reasons for maintaining this Studio Company is training dancers to take care of their own health consistently before moving into the actual company. It seems like such a wonderful, fruitful training ground. And it’s mutually beneficial - it allows the company to consistently bring in new, already acclimated dancers. I didn’t realize that it actually was on tour, which is wonderful. It’s not uncommon for dancers to not have the proper fare to travel and participate in such a program - for the program to tour to them and recognize and feed their talent is invaluable. I think it’s a really effective model to have the Studio Company focused on discovering and developing new talent and innovations, and have the main company still performing their own material. It’s important for any artistic institution to make an active effort to innovate and keep up with the changing industry, especially one as influential as ABT, so it’s great that they’ve developed a clear outlet to do so.
