Artist Entrance: Kelly Copper

The Theatre Times: Every month, Etcetera gazes into the soul of a performing artist. We choose artistic interest over human interest. This time, we are happy to give the word to Kelly Copper (1971). Together with Pavol Liska, she founded the collective Nature Theater of Oklahoma in 2004. Using readymade material, found space, gifted properties, cosmic accident, extreme formal manipulation, and plain hard work, Nature Theater of Oklahoma makes art to affect a shift in the perception of everyday reality that extends beyond the site of performance and into the world in which we live.

I loved learning about Kelly Copper’s upbringing and work in theatre! It was great to hear about her dad, a radio personality, and how his art affected her. I grew up with two fine artists as parents, and we lived in an artist cooperative for much of my childhood. I, too, feel like I grew up surrounded by adults who were “colorful.”
I share this want for nature with Copper. I related to her when she discussed wanting to show work outdoors, in some “vast landscape.” About a year ago, I watched the video installation The Visitors at SFMOMA. I think it has the same “vast landscape” Copper talks about with the filmmaker Gregory Markopoulos’ work.
It was sweet to hear about her tradition of singing with the actors and designers and technicians at Home in Oklahoma. Its amazing to develop a comfortable relationship with the other artists you’re working with.
I found Copper’s interview to be relatable in a comforting way. Much of her upbringing relates to mine, and her thoughts reminded me to value what she does- art, nature, and collaboration.
