Minnesota Public Radio: Guthrie Artistic Director Joe Dowling is struggling to protect his theater's reputation after a week of outrage in the arts community over the Guthrie's new season, which some have declared "a tragedy.
As Americans, we all still struggle with the ideas of race and gender, and how to make our society an equal one for all. The fact that this Guthrie season has become a lighting rod is indicative of that. There are groups in this country who still believe they are underrepresented (often rightly so), and especially looking at recent news, particularly the controversy over contraceptives, and women, it is clear that the issues of discrimination are still prevalent, though they have lessened or morphed into new forms. I think there needs to be a continuing discussion about race and gender in this country, and the picking of the Guthrie season is yet another talking point to this larger discussion
